Dear Cole:
Last night, you successfully used the potty for the first time. You have been enjoying sitting on it for weeks now and reading books, and we’ve come to believe that asking to go potty is your stalling technique. You’ve sat there for as long as 30 minutes at a time with no outcome. So when you asked to go potty last night at bedtime, I figured you were trying to delay bedtime. But I let you do it while I helped Jon get ready for bed. A few minutes later, you announced that you were done—and lo and behold, you were right. There was lots of cheering and applause from all of us. You particularly enjoyed emptying the results of your hard labor into the toilet. Tonight, you had another success. I can’t tell you how impressed and proud we are. We certainly did not expect any success in this undertaking for at least six more months. But you have proven to us again and again that you make your own rules. Way to go, big boy.
Love,
Mama
