Writing my first dear Jon letter

Dear Jon:

You are starting preschool on Monday. I am so excited for you, but I am also nervous. I have gotten so used to knowing exactly what you are doing at any given point of the day, even when I am not with you. At school, you will be on your own--and I am sad that I won't be able to "sneak a peek" at you to see how you are, how you develop new friendships and deal with new conflicts.

Yesterday, a friend of mine sent me a link to the pictures from her family's summer vacation. I looked at her little girl, Maddy, who is the same age as you and with whom you spent lots of time in daycare (and had your first crush on)--and I wondered when she stopped being a baby and became a little girl.

While the paragraphs above seem to have little in common, it is a combination of these two events that reminded me, once again, how fast the time flies. You are a few months away from your 3rd birthday. You change every day. You make us laugh every day. You discover something new every day. You make us love you more and more every day. And because my long-term memory has never been a strength for me, I owe it to you--and to me--to start keeping a "paper" record of your childhood.

Love,
Mom
